ASE

The independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972 in response to the need of consumers to be able to distinguish between incompetent and competent mechanics. Their mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.

There are about 400,000 professionals holding certifications today working in every segment of the automotive industry. Certification is not something that is easy to obtain either. Prospective candidates must pass at least one of ASE’s 40-plus exams and provide proof of two years of relevant work experience in order to get their certification. Certification is not for life however; to remain certified you must be retested every five years. The exams stress knowledge of job-related skills and are not easy to pass with one out of three test takers failing.

ASE feels that by setting high standards for mechanics they can greatly benefit motorist. They provide a valuable yardstick by which to measure the knowledge and skills of individual technicians as well as the commitment to quality of the repair facility employing ASE-Certified professionals.
