Gear Up for Hunting Season!

Make sure you prepare your vehicle for your next hunt

Hunting and fishing are two Pacific Northwest pastimes with a rich history. We like to get outdoors around here, to face the elements and enjoy nature to the fullest.

At Larry’s Transmission, we enjoy hunting season. We also enjoy safety tips, so we decided to share a few with you on how to get yourself and your vehicle ready before your next hunting adventure.

How do I learn about Pacific NW hunting?

You can check out the Oregon Department of Fishing and Wildlife website or the Washington Department of Fishing and Wildlife website. On these sites, you will find:

  • Hunting season dates
  • Permit info
  • Maps to hunting sites
  • Safety tips

If you are new to either state, it is a good idea to read up on permit and weapon regulations before you pack for a hunt. Make sure that you do not run the risk of a fine, especially if you plan to take a young hunter with you that will learn from your own hunting habits.

What should I know about preparing my vehicle for hunting?

Make sure your truck, SUV or other vehicle is in great shape before you leave. Be sure to:

  • Get an oil change
  • Check/top off antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc.
  • Make sure all interior and exterior lights are working
  • Make sure your car battery has a full charge
  • Bring an extra battery, extra belts, extra engine fluids
  • Fill the gas tank up and bring a full gas can or two
  • Make sure you have a working tire jack and spare
  • Bring a few cans of Fix-A-Flat

What should I pack before I head out?

Pack enough food and fresh water in iced coolers for as long as you plan to camp and hunt. Make sure you have a first aid kit and a way to radio or call for help in the event of an emergency.

As for tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, clothes, weapons, ammo and other items, pack according to your skill level as a hunter and your ability to survive in nature. Follow this rule of thumb:

It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
